Students of Uganda's main university burned vehicles and ransacked shops yesterday as they protested against an increase in the fee for retaking exams from 6,000 shillings (£1.72) to 120,000.

The private KFM radio station reported that two students were killed, but Patrick Onyango, the deputy police spokesman, said that no students died. Several students were injured and dozens of riot police were deployed in and around the state-owned Makerere University in Kampala, where they fired plastic bullets and tear gas at the students, said Mr Onyango.
